CIFA celebrates 86th ICAR foundation day

Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar based Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA), a constituent of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR); celebrated its 86th Foundation Day of ICAR on Wednesday.

“The purpose of observing ICAR foundation day in CIFA is to recollect, share and sensitize people about the roles and contributions of ICAR for the growth and development of our country,” said Dr P Jayasankar, Director of CIFA.

Jayasankar said, “People will be also appraised of various plans, research programmes of the institute highlighting the technologies pertaining to carps, catfishes, murrels, koi, prawns, ornamental fishes, pearl culture, portable carp and magur hatchery and different products developed by it, so that they may utilize and spread these development messages among others. In the present transitional phase where there is a paradigm shift from production to productivity to agri-business, one of the major focuses of the Institute is to develop entrepreneurship in freshwater aquaculture.”

About 300 representatives comprising several renowned dignitaries in the field of research and development, entrepreneurs, rural youths, fisheries and management students from colleges and universities of Odisha, officials from NABARD, RBI, BOI, MSME, APICOL and other stakeholders attended the function.

On the occasion, an interactive technical session ‘Entrepreneurship Development in Freshwater Aquaculture’ involving all stakeholders was organized along with a few lead lectures to sensitize and motivate youths to take up aquaculture-business  as profession.

Prof K. Pradhan, Former Vice Chancellor, Odisha University of Agriculture & Technology inaugurated the function and delivered a lecture on contributions of ICAR for ensuring food security of our country. He underscored the further needs for appropriate innovations in agricultural research, education, technology transfer and marketing of products to make the organization ever responsive, resilient, vibrant and viable.
