4 Odia women hockey players selected for Rio Olympics

Bhubaneswar, July 12: Delighted over the selection of four women hockey players from Odisha in the Indian squad for the Rio Olympics starting from August 5, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday said that their achievements will give a huge boost to the sport in Odisha and inspire more youth to reach such pinnacle of sporting success.

“Congratulations to Deep Grace Ekka, Namita Toppo, Lilima Minz & Sunita Lakra for making it to Indian women’s hockey team for Rio 2016. Selection of four players from Sundargarh, the cradle of hockey, is a stellar example of the abundance of talent in our state. The achievements of these bright young girls reinforce our efforts in making our state a premier centre of excellence in hockey in the nation,” Patnaik posted in his Facebook page.

“I wish our players all the best in their quest for glory in RIO Olympics. Their achievements will give a huge boost to the sport in Odisha and inspire more youth to reach such pinnacle of sporting success,” Patnaik further posted.

Ace sprinters Srabani Nanda and Dutee Chand from the State have already selected for the Rio Olympics.

Indian hockey women will feature in the quadrennial Games after a gap of 36 years.

Meanwhile, the Odisha Government announced a cash prize of Rs 50,000 each for the four girls.
