Odisha launches pilgrimage for senior citizens

Berhampur, July 25: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday launched tour programme for senior citizens from Berhampur railway station. Pilgrims would tour from Berhampur to Rameshwaram and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

In the first phase of the programme, a total of 977 pilgrims from across 10 districts boarded the train for Rameshwaram and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

In the 2014 election manifesto, the BJD had promised to provide one-time financial assistance to senior citizens for pilgrimage to different religious destinations in the country.

Under the scheme, the Government would bear the entire tour expenditure of devotees including travel, accommodation and medical expenses, sources said.

The three-month tour programme will begin from July every year.

The first State-sponsored pilgrimage scheme for senior citizens was launched at the railway station here after CM flagged off a special train for the purpose.

As many as four platoons of police were deployed at the railway station for the safety and security of the Chief Minister’s visit.
