Student volunteers to manage traffic in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack

Bhubaneswar, Aug 10: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday gave his nod to a proposal of Student Traffic Volunteer Scheme (STVS) in the twin city of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

The scheme would involve university and college students as volunteers to assist traffic police in managing vehicle flow on the roads of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar during peak hours. The volunteers will be engaged for a maximum three hours on a day, particularly during their leisure time. They will be provided with stipend, which will be directly transferred to their bank accounts. All measures will be taken to ensure their dignity on job.

“Delighted to give assent to the proposal for launching Student Traffic Volunteer Scheme (STVS) in the Twin City of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The novel initiative will not only strengthen traffic management but also bring a positive change in road user behaviour,” Patnaik posted in his Facebook page.

The programme is a pioneering step in inculcating discipline and the habit of voluntary compliance to road safety rules among youth. The youngsters apart from managing traffic will also carry out public awareness programmes on road safety. Active involvement of students in traffic management and education will help bring a much needed transformation in road user behaviour by motivating citizens to adhere to road safety rules.
