3-day mammal census at Bhitarkanika from Nov 19

Kendrapara, Nov 5: The annual mammal census would be conducted at the Bhitarkanika National Park from November 19 to 21. However, during this period, any ban on tourists’ entry would not be imposed, official sources said.

The census would be carried out for three days in Bhitarkanika National Park, Bhitarkanika wildlife sanctuary and Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary Range area, sources in the Rajnagar Wildlife Division said.

As per the last year report, 3,125 deer, 1,394 wild boars, four sambar deer, 1,313 rhesus macaques, 19 common languors, 186 jackals, 28 fishing cats, 122 otters, 18 foxes and 12 hyenas, three porcupines, eight jungle cats, seven hares and three leopard cats were spotted in Mahakalpada, Rajnagar, Gahirmatha  Kanika and Kujang forests and the wildlife ranges within the Bhitarkanika National Park.
