10 new projects for 5,000 EWS houses in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar, Mar 2: The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) in association with the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) would develop 10 slum development projects in the city to have new housing stocks and create 5,000 more residential units for economically- weaker sections (EWSs).

As the city, under various public-private partnership (PPP) projects, has already made a plan to have more than 5,000 EWS houses so far in various pockets, this new initiative would add to that to have over 10,000 housing stocks exclusively for the EWS category very soon, said a BDA source on Thursday.

The development process would include both green field and brown field models, i.e., where slums are not there but land is available presently or where there is a need to relocate the slum residents to develop the project by creating land.

Notably, the State Government has come up with a policy for ‘Housing for All’ in urban areas to promote development of affordable housing units. As per the policy, there are seven models to ensure more and more affordable houses across the State through seven types of PPP models.
However in the aforesaid 10 slum projects, appropriate models would be considered so that the work is done faster to ensure housing for the poor.

Apart from the PPP housing models, an innovative public-private community participation (PPCP) model would be introduced for the first time in the State to achieve the urban housing dream for the needy. In this initiative, the stakeholders and community members in the slums would play an active role in ensuring smooth progress and timely completion of the housing target.

Active involvement of slum dwellers would lead to formation of slum-level registered societies to create an enormous social capital, thereby helping in smoothening and expediting the process of relocation and rehabilitation and ensuring timely completion of the EWS housing units.
