CM announces cash reward of Rs 12 lakh for para athlete Jayanti

Bhubaneswar, August 10: A day after para athlete Jayanti Behera rued lack of support from the Government and corporate sectors to para athletes, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday felicitated the World Junior Para Athletics Championships gold and silver medallist and also annocuned a cash prize of Rs 12 lakh  for her. 

“I am delighted to meet World Junior Para Athletics Championships gold and silver medalist Jayanti Behera. She has made the state proud with her stupendous feat. Her success is a towering example of beating all odds with determination and hard work. She is an inspiration for all of us,” said Patanik.

I also announced a cash prize of Rs 12 lakh as mark of our recognition of her efforts, added Patnaik.

Behera has put the state on the map of world athletics by winning one gold and one silver medal in the recently-concluded World Junior Para Athlete Championships at Nottwil, Switzerland, August 3-6.

She bagged a gold medal in the 400 metres T47 event with a timing of 1.01 minutes and a silver medal in the 200 metres T47 category by clocking 28.04 seconds. Upon her arrival in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday she decried lack of support from the Government and corporate sectors and said it’s quite unfortunate not to get any support from the State Government despite her achievements at the international level tournaments.
